Thinking About Hair Extensions? Let's Have an Honest Chat First
Share
Hi, I’m Misty Rackley, founder of Salon Blue. After more than 20 years behind the chair, I’ve learned that the most important part of your hair extension journey happens long before the installation. It starts with honesty about your hair’s current health, your lifestyle, and your expectations.
Extensions can be absolutely transformational, but they’re not for everyone right away. Sometimes, the best way to protect your long-term hair health is to wait and prepare. Other times, the hair might be ready, but the lifestyle isn’t.
Here are two real extension journeys that show both sides of readiness, one where we had to wait, and one where timing and commitment made all the difference.
The Client Who Needed to Wait First
Last February, Elara came into Salon Blue practically glowing with excitement. She had just gotten engaged and wanted long, full hair for her October wedding.
“I need extensions,” she said, showing me photos on her phone. “My hair barely touches my shoulders, but I want it down to here.” She pointed to her mid-back.
I could see the vision immediately, but experience has taught me that enthusiasm alone doesn’t mean the hair is ready.
“Let’s take a look at your hair first,” I said.
Elara had been highlighting at home for years. Her ends were dry, brittle, and breaking. When I ran them between my fingers, they felt almost crunchy. I gently pulled a shed strand; it snapped right away with barely any resistance, like a piece of straw. That meant no elasticity. I also performed a porosity test. When the strand hit water, it sank almost instantly, showing high porosity and severe dryness.
“Elara,” I said gently, “your hair isn’t ready yet. It’s fragile and overprocessed. If we installed extensions today, the weight and tension would cause breakage. You’d end up with less hair than you started with.”
Her shoulders dropped. “But my wedding is in October. I really wanted long hair for it.”
“I understand,” I said. “But we can get you there safely. We just need to strengthen your hair for the next few months. Otherwise, we’d be risking damage that would take years to repair.”
Building Strength Before Length
For the next four months, Elara came in every four weeks for bond-building and moisture treatments. We alternated between protein-based repair masks and hydrating services to restore elasticity and shine. At home, she used the Olaplex No.2 Hair Perfector and Amika The Kure Bond Repair Mask, alternating weekly.
By her eight-week visit, her hair had improved, but the elasticity test still showed weakness. “Better,” I told her, “but we’re not there yet.”
At the twelve-week mark, the results were different. The strand stretched and bounced back, a perfect sign of strength. When I repeated the porosity test, the strand floated for several seconds before slowly sinking.
“Now,” I said, smiling, “your hair is ready.”
The Transformation
In late June, we installed Invisible Bead Extensions, the most secure and damage-free method available. They blended seamlessly with her natural hair, giving her the length and volume she’d dreamed of.
By October, Elara walked down the aisle with healthy, luminous, full hair that looked like it had always been hers.
At her November move-up appointment, she told me, “I was so frustrated when you said I had to wait, but now I’m grateful. My hair feels stronger than it has in years. If we’d rushed, I’d probably be dealing with breakage instead of compliments.”
Waiting had paid off.
The Client Whose Lifestyle Had to Catch Up
In April, another client named Celine came in for a consultation. Her hair was strong and healthy, a textbook candidate for extensions.
“I’m ready for long hair,” she said confidently. “Let’s do it.”
“Tell me about your routine,” I asked.
“I’m a fitness instructor,” she said. “I teach water aerobics three times a week and regular fitness classes every day. I’m at the gym from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. most days.”
“So you’re in chlorine several times a week and sweating daily?”
She nodded. “Yep. Why?”
The Reality Check
“Extensions can handle a lot,” I told her, “but chlorine is harsh on them. Before swimming, you’d need to wet your hair with fresh water, apply a leave-in conditioner, and braid it to protect the wefts. After every class, you’d have to rinse thoroughly, shampoo, and condition immediately. Every single time.”
Her face changed. “That sounds like a lot of maintenance.”
“It is,” I said honestly. “And because you sweat daily, you’d also need to brush your extensions every morning and night for about 15 minutes to prevent tangling near the scalp. That’s non-negotiable.”
She frowned. “I’m usually out the door by 4:45 a.m. I don’t have that kind of time.”
“Then we should pause,” I said gently. “Your hair health is perfect, but your schedule isn’t ready for the commitment yet. Installing extensions when you can’t care for them properly would just lead to matting and stress on your natural hair.”
Celine pulled out her phone and checked her schedule. “What if I stopped teaching water aerobics? Would that help?”
“It would help with the chlorine,” I said. “But you’d still need to brush daily, use sulfate-free shampoo, and schedule move-ups every 6 to 8 weeks. It’s a commitment.”
Then we talked about cost. Installation would be around $300, move-ups about $150 every six weeks, plus around $75 in products like extension-safe shampoo and conditioning treatments.
Celine did the math. “That’s about $1,500 a year.”
“At least,” I said. “Extensions are a luxury investment, and they need consistent care.”
After a moment, she smiled. “I think I’ll wait. I want them, but I can’t give them the time they deserve right now.”
When Readiness Finally Arrived
Six months later, Celine returned. “I changed jobs,” she said, smiling. “I’m managing a fitness studio now instead of teaching. No more 4:45 a.m. mornings, and I’m not in the pool three times a week anymore. I have time to actually take care of my hair now. Can we talk about extensions again?”
Her hair was still healthy, and her new schedule gave her the time for proper care. We installed Invisible Bead Extensions, and she’s been maintaining them beautifully ever since.
At her last move-up, she laughed. “It’s funny. I didn’t realize how much care extensions needed until I actually had time to do it. Now that I do, it’s totally worth it.”
Lessons From Both Journeys
Elara’s story shows that being ready isn’t just about desire, it’s about the health of your natural hair. Her damaged, porous hair needed four months of strengthening before it could safely handle extensions, and the result was worth every minute of waiting.
Celine’s story shows that readiness also depends on lifestyle. She had healthy hair but didn’t have the time for maintenance. Once her schedule changed, she could finally commit fully and enjoy the experience without stress.
Both clients succeeded because they didn’t rush. Healthy hair and honest timing always win.
How to Know If You’re Ready for Extensions
Here’s a quick self-check based on what I look for during consultations:
Hair Health Indicators:
Elasticity test: Your hair should stretch slightly and bounce back, not snap.
-
Porosity test: A strand should float briefly before sinking, not drop immediately.
If your hair fails these, focus on strengthening for 3 to 4 months before proceeding.
Lifestyle Factors:
-
Can you brush your extensions morning and night for 15 to 20 minutes daily?
-
Do you have time for proper washing and conditioning after workouts or swimming?
-
Are you prepared for regular move-ups every 6 to 8 weeks?
-
Can you budget $1,500 to $2,000 yearly for installation, maintenance, and products?
If you can answer yes to most of these, you’re likely ready. If not, that’s okay. Sometimes the smartest move is to prepare first.
