Is Your Marlton Hair Routine Working for Your Hair Type?

Most home routines fail because the products are not matched to the specific hair type using them. The right routine for fine hair is completely different from the right routine for color-treated hair.

Start with your scalp

Your scalp functions as skin and responds to care similarly to facial skin. Excessive washing strips natural oils and triggers the scalp to overproduce; insufficient washing allows buildup to congest follicles. Two to three weekly washes suit most South Jersey hair types. A balanced scalp is the foundation for all hair health.

Understanding hair porosity

Porosity measures hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. Low-porosity hair has a tightly sealed cuticle resistant to moisture absorption — lightweight liquid-based products on damp hair penetrate more effectively than heavy creams. High-porosity hair (common in bleached or repeatedly colored hair) absorbs moisture quickly but loses it rapidly, requiring richer formulas that seal the cuticle.

Matching products to your specific hair type

Fine hair requires lightweight products. Clear shampoos, lightweight volumizing sprays, and conditioner applied only to the ends keep fine hair moving without heaviness. A client named Callie experienced progressive volume loss while using a heavy moisturizing conditioner — switching to lightweight volumizing products and getting a Calligraphy Cut restored volume retention through days two and three.

Color-treated and bleached hair

Color-treated hair requires sulfate-free shampoo as baseline protection. Sulfates strip color molecules faster than any other variable. Heavily bleached hair needs consistent bond-building support — Olaplex used weekly as a pre-shampoo treatment rebuilds internal bond damage progressively.

The organic difference

Wair Studio uses ammonia-, PPD-, and resorcinol-free color formulas, employing MEA instead of ammonia. The products you use between appointments either support or undermine the organic color work we do in the salon. We carry Davines and O&M COR Colour specifically formulated to work with organic color.

Wash day sequence

Shampoo the scalp only, letting suds rinse through the lengths. Apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends only, never the scalp. Apply leave-in conditioner to damp hair before drying — the open cuticle absorbs more effectively. Apply serum or finishing oil last as a seal.

Nighttime protection

Cotton pillowcases create friction that disrupts the cuticle and accelerates breakage. Silk or satin pillowcases reduce friction significantly. A loose braid before bed prevents tangling and reduces morning breakage.

When your routine is not the problem

Professional clarifying treatments address hard water mineral buildup. When hair stays dry despite appropriate products, professional bond-building or conditioning treatment may be necessary before home routines can be effective. Products work best on hair that is in a position to respond to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wash my hair?

Two to three times a week works for most hair types. If your scalp is consistently oily by the next morning, your frequency or formula may need adjustment.

Does hard water affect hair in South Jersey?

Yes. Mineral buildup accumulates on the hair shaft and makes color go dull and products less effective. A monthly clarifying shampoo resets the surface.

Are organic products actually better for hair?

For most clients, organic formulas without harsh synthetic ingredients are gentler on both hair and scalp. We use ammonia-free, PPD-free color specifically because it produces better long-term hair health outcomes.

How do I know if my routine needs professional adjustment?

If your hair is not improving after four to six weeks of consistent changes, come in for an assessment. Most routine problems are diagnosable in a single appointment.
